Originally trained as a theatre designer, James has extensive experience as a scenic artist, painting sets for various theatrical productions, television shows and feature films. His professional career began at the St. Louis Municipal Opera where he painted scenery for nine seasons of new productions and touring shows. He went on to study theatre at Northwestern University in Chicago where he continued to work as a stage designer and scenic artist. In 1992 he moved to New York to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. After receiving an MFA in design, he began working on a freelance basis in the news design department at ABC. This led to a position as associate designer at Production Design Group where the foundation for a career in broadcast design was laid.
James has over fifteen years experience as a production designer and art director developing designs for numerous broadcast and cable television projects. He subscribes to an all-encompassing digital design philosophy that incorporates his extensive skills in 3D rendering, CAD drafting and graphic design software. His work runs the gambit of news, sports, talk, public affairs reality, game and entertainment programming. Recent clients include ABC, CBS, MSNBC, tru TV, PBS, Fox Business, CNBC and ESPN. In 2002, James was recognized for contributing to the Emmy Award-winning program, Inside The NFL, produced by HBO. His ABC Sports set for Super Bowl XL in Detroit was seen by an estimated 141 million people in the United States.
While his primary focus is on television, James has a growing portfolio of designs for corporate meetings and events, trade shows, interactive display, and architectural projects. He has applied his talents to projects for The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, Toys R Us, McNeil Pediatrics, Canadian Tire, CanWest Mediaworks and Sun Microsystems among others.
James resides in beautiful Brooklyn with his wife and daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys biking in Prospect Park and playing the guitar. James likes to spend his summers lying on the beach with his family on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.
